The Professionalism and Communication in Healthcare - Platform (Formerly DocCom) is an online resource for teaching, learning, and assessing communication and relationship-centered skills in health care education
Why Teach Professionalism and Communication in Medical School?
Professionalism and communication are foundational competencies in medical education, critical to effective, ethical, and compassionate care. Teaching these skills prepares students to:
- Improve Patient Outcomes: Clear, respectful communication reduces errors and enhances care quality.
- Build Trust: Professional behavior fosters trust between physicians and patients.
- Collaborate Effectively: Strong communication supports teamwork and coordination in complex healthcare settings.
- Deliver Patient-Centered Care: Empathetic, culturally sensitive communication improves patient satisfaction and engagement.
- Develop Professional Identity: Early exposure helps shape ethical, resilient future physicians.
- Meet Accreditation Standards: These skills are core requirements set by accrediting bodies like AAMC and LCME.
Professionalism and effective communication are essential components of medical practice and patient care. To support the development of these core competencies, Professionalism and Communication in Healthcare – Learning Modules will be assigned throughout the medical school curriculum.
Students will complete these modules as part of designated courses and or clerkships. Access details, expectations, and submission requirements will be provided within each course where the modules are assigned. These modules are designed to reinforce key skills in ethical practice, teamwork, cultural sensitivity, and patient-centered communication.
